"Blood Diamond" Information

The movie in question addresses the “conflict diamond” issue, an issue that we as an industry take very seriously and have taken seriously for some time now. Do I believe that it might adversely affect the trade or the industry? No, I don’t believe it will. Why? Because we as an industry have been very proactive to ensure that our industry does not support or deal in these conflict diamonds that support rebels or unrecognized rebel faction groups. Since the implementation of the Kimberley Process and System of Warranties back in 2000 the presence of conflict diamonds in the marketplace has been reduced from 4% to less than 1% of all diamonds, a figure that is still unacceptable to us. We have a zero-tolerance policy towards conflict diamonds.

Our industry has been and will always continue to be one of the more philanthropic industries out there. This is something I am extremely proud of. We give quite a bit back both domestically and internationally to many causes. In Africa alone, where 65% of the world’s diamonds are mined, the revenues from the diamond trade provide the following:
  • Healthcare to an estimated 5 million people

  • Free education up to the age of 13 for every child in Botswana

  • 40% of Namibia’s annual export earnings

  • Revenue to help fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa

  • Better infrastructure for the African people, including the construction of hospitals, medical centers and hospices that ensure that millions of people have access to appropriate healthcare

  • A community based care program for orphaned children in South Africa

As for diamonds losing their symbolic value to married couples or anyone else for that matter, I don’t view that as happening. As long as we continue to be vigilant and responsible as an industry to this issue, or any other issue(s), diamonds will continue to be supported and adorned by not only married couples but all others as well.
